Main Areas of Focus: Janitorial & Groundskeeping, Set Up & Tear Down, Maintenance & Facility Care

Location: Franklin, TN.

Position Summary

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, readiness, and overall appearance of the church campus. Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, this role ensures that all facilities are clean, safe, and properly prepared for worship services, ministries, and special events. The Custodian supports the mission of the church by providing an excellent, welcoming environment for members and guests.

Key Roles

#1: Cleaning & Campus Care

Cleanliness and hospitality are essential to a healthy ministry environment. This role encompasses:

  • Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms; ensuring adequate supplies of soap, paper products, and related materials.

  • Emptying trash receptacles and removing refuse from buildings.

  • Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and waxing floors as scheduled or as required by events.

  • Vacuuming carpets and cleaning rugs.

  • Dusting furniture, shelving, and fixtures.

  • Washing walls, windows, and glass surfaces as scheduled.

  • Assisting with exterior cleanliness including trash removal and general grounds care as assigned.

  • Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness across all ministry areas including classrooms, offices, lobbies, worship spaces, and common areas.

#2: Room Setup & Event Support

Custodians plays a crucial role in preparing physical spaces for gatherings and resetting them afterward. This role encompasses:

  • Setting up classrooms, assembly areas, and event spaces for church functions.

  • Arranging tables, chairs, and equipment for banquets, meetings, services, and special occasions.

  • Assisting with preparation for weddings, funerals, conferences, and special church events.

  • Resetting rooms after events to ensure readiness for future use.

  • Coordinating with the Facilities Manager to ensure setup requests are completed accurately and on time.

#3: Basic Maintenance Support

  • Making minor, non-technical repairs as assigned (e.g., replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures).

  • Reporting maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or facility issues promptly to the Facilities Manager.

  • Assisting with preventative maintenance tasks as directed.

  • Maintaining and organizing custodial equipment and supply areas.

#4: Documentation & Communication

  • Maintaining cleaning logs and task lists as required.

  • Communicating clearly and promptly regarding supply needs or facility concerns.

  • Completing additional duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • 0–2 years of custodial or related experience preferred.

  • Strong work ethic and servant-hearted attitude.

  • Professional appearance and positive demeanor.

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and follow written and verbal instructions.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach.

  • Frequently uses hands to handle tools and cleaning equipment.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally.

SALARY RANGE
Employment type (exempt/non-exempt) and pay structure (salary/hourly) are based on Full-Time or Part-Time status and are based on experience, gifting, and qualifications.
